Federal, state, and county: testing, treatment, and PrEP

HIV Prevention

HIV work is the spine of Better World Advertising, and it is the spine of this record. The studio archive tags eighty-seven campaigns HIV and STD prevention. Three stand for them, one federal, one a multi-state franchise, one county, covering testing, treatment, and prevention.

Testing Makes Us Stronger · Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

A national campaign to increase HIV testing among African American men who have sex with men, ages eighteen to forty-four. The line is set in gold: testing makes us stronger, strength framed as knowing, not hoping. Your HIV test result expires every time you have risky sex. The buy ran national: billboards, bus sides, station saturations, transit shelters, print, digital, brochures, postcards, and a full merchandise program. A companion edition with Advocates for Youth carried the message to ages thirteen to nineteen. Communicator Awards Gold Award of Excellence, Community Awareness Program, 2014.

HIV Stops With Me · the franchise

Seventeen editions of it sit in the studio archive. The flagship client is the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute, with partner health departments over the years from Boston to Alaska. The premise has never changed: spokesmodels living with HIV, named and photographed with pride: prevention by dismantling stigma. Television, subway station dominations, billboards, transit, digital, social.

The franchise predates my arrival, taking Webby People's Voice Awards for Health in 2003 and 2005, and it has run through my entire tenure: EXPOSED, Faces, Hardcore Treatment Advocate, Undetectable, Treatment Changes Everything, Slay, CEO of My Life, and today's Positive Vibes. Along the way: an American Graphic Design Award for the 2009 station domination, a Davey Silver for Undetectable in 2014, a Communicator Silver for the EXPOSED films in 2018.

I'm Safe on PrEP · Hamilton County Public Health

Prevention at county scale: PrEP as easy to get and easy to take, for gay and bisexual men in Hamilton County, Ohio. Spokesmodels again, named, at ease, photographed in their own clothes, because the lesson of the franchise travels. Social, digital, posters, and the campaign site TryPrEP.org.
